Common questions

Do Japanese citizens need a visa for the UK?
No. Japanese citizens can visit the UK visa-free for up to 6 months for tourism, business meetings, or study courses under 6 months. No advance application is required.
How long can Japanese citizens stay in the UK?
You can stay for up to 6 months per visit. However, you cannot live in the UK through frequent or successive visits. Immigration officers may question you if you spend more time in the UK than in Japan.
Can I work in the UK as a Japanese tourist?
No. Visa-free entry does not permit any paid or unpaid work. This includes remote work for Japanese clients while in the UK. If you need to work, you must apply for an appropriate work visa.
What documents do I need to enter the UK?
You need a valid Japanese passport, return or onward travel tickets, proof of accommodation, and evidence of sufficient funds. No visa or electronic authorization is required.
Can I extend my stay beyond 6 months?
In most cases, no. You are expected to leave before your permitted stay ends. Extensions are only granted in exceptional circumstances such as medical emergencies.
What happens if I am refused entry?
If a border officer has concerns about your travel purpose or intentions, they may refuse entry. You would be returned to Japan. Having clear documentation of your travel plans reduces this risk.
