Common questions
- Do Japanese citizens need a visa for the USA?
- No. Japan is part of the Visa Waiver Program, so Japanese citizens can visit for tourism or business for up to 90 days with an approved ESTA. A visa is only needed for longer stays, work, or study.
- How long is ESTA valid?
- ESTA authorization is valid for 2 years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. You can make multiple trips during this period without reapplying.
- How long can I stay in the US with ESTA?
- Each visit can be up to 90 days. You cannot extend your stay or change status while in the US under the Visa Waiver Program. The 90-day limit includes any side trips to Canada, Mexico, or the Caribbean.
- What is the ESTA fee for Japanese citizens?
- The total ESTA fee is US$21, which includes a $4 processing fee and $17 authorization fee. Payment is made online by credit card during the application.
- How quickly is ESTA approved?
- Most ESTA applications are approved within minutes. However, some may take up to 72 hours. Apply at least 72 hours before your flight to allow processing time.
- Can I work in the US with ESTA?
- No. ESTA is only for tourism, business meetings, or transit. Any paid work requires a proper work visa. This includes remote work for US or Japanese companies while physically in the US.
